If you’re trying to lose weight this summer, then you know that celebrations like the 4th of July can be tricky to navigate. It’s hard to stay social and slim down at the same time. But it’s not impossible. Use these tips to keep your diet on track and still have fun when you celebrate.
4th Of July Diet Tips
- Don’t eat from bowls or trays. Skip the snack foods that are served in large bowls or trays. Why? Because it is nearly impossible to keep track of how much you’re eating. You’re likely to be involved in other activities or engaged in conversation when you grab food mindlessly from a large serving dish. You can easily overeat without knowing it. Plate your food and enjoy your treats in moderation.
- Build a smarter plate. If you go to a barbecue or picnic, try to build a smart plate to encourage good health. Use the My Plate icon (above) as a guide for the way that your plate should look. And don’t let your foods touch. That’s a tricky way to make sure that you are not overeating or heaping mounds of food on your plate.
- Be a savvy drinker. If you choose to drink alcoholic beverages on the 4th of July, try to choose a lower calorie option. For example, do you know how many calories are in beer? What about the number of calories in wine or the caloric cost of a margarita? Know what the drink will “cost” you before you make a choice. Then supplement with flavored water for the rest of the night.
Have a safe and peaceful celebration!
